Ellen Pence

Ellen Pence, a great advocate, activist and friend – who dedicated her life to educating everyone on how to respond to domestic abuse – has sadly passed away.

Her influence in the domestic violence field was huge – a quick Google search shows the many hits of a lifetime of work – but it cannot do justice to the inspirational speaker and educator she was, using story and humour to challenge and subvert long held beliefs about violence against women.

Ellen always kept the voice of the survivor at the heart of all her work – and was part of the inspirational group that developed the Duluth Interagency Model, a ‘coordinated community response to domestic abuse’ that laid the foundations for how we work today – superseding MARAC’s and IDVA’s.

She made sure that the voices of women – so eloquently represented in the Power & Control Wheel and the little known manual ‘In Our Best Interest’ – are kept at the heart of our work.

I hope that we continue to use Ellen’s ideas and her work through Praxis International to inspire us to listen and learn from all those who have experienced abuse.

What it means& a short history:
In 1991, a handful of men in Canada decided they had a responsibility to urge men to speak out against violence against women. They decided that wearing a white ribbon would be a symbol of men’s opposition to men’s violence against women. After only six weeks preparation, as many as one hundred thousand men across Canada wore a white ribbon. Many others were drawn into discussion and debate on the issue of men’s violence. There are now White Ribbon Campaigns operating in many countries around the world.
The UK Branch of WRC was started in 2004

Paloma released Modus for use by Agencies, the police, probation and social services who are monitoring Domestic Violence survivors. In thelast 18 months we have developed it to be used for MARAC management as well.

The Modus system works for case workers, managers and governement bodies collating data and all or part of a database can be shared as required.
